Why do some people not understand this? King George Square in the city, sure it wasn’t perfect but it was a hell of a lot better than the grey open oven, lacking any soul pit of despair we have now. Personally I believe Campbell Newman could turn into a Gandhi, mark 2, wouldn’t make a difference. He is still going to hell for the monstrosity that is now sitting out the front of the City Hall.
Of course he’s not the only person in power who can’t help themselves and have to go and ‘improve’ or ‘upgrade’ something. I was looking through my little list of places I want to photograph the other day, surfing the web for ideas when I came across this interesting little piece of information on the Gold Coast City Council web site.
“Gold Coast City Council is currently planning a redevelopment of Cavill Mall, with works expected to start mid 2011.”
Well there goes another well known place we all have fond memories of. Pessimistic? Yep. That’s me. But lets face it, Cavill Mall is one of those places that while on one hand holds happy memories for countless people is also home to some of the most loved not to mention fantastically catastrophic objects de art. Those reading this who are now crying that I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, people of the jury I give you ‘The Throne’.
Whilst The Throne does have a certain charm, it is not exactly something that the powers that be would have any problem making disappear during the ‘Redevelopment’. Or worse. I am still in mourning for those poor ancient lions in King George Square. Now sitting atop their little lumps of plastic that glow purple (WFT, Purple???) at night. I don’t care how politically incorrect I am for saying this, someone needs to be shot and burnt for that idea. End of story.
Needless to say that pretty much made the decision for me about next week. I am off to Cavill Mall to capture a few things just in case they mysteriously vanish in the process of ‘redevelopment’. Needless to say the day I am going is also the day that a certain second cyclone called Yasi is due to arrive. Now I realise the Gold Coast is probably not in any imminent danger of Yasi or basically any other cyclone, but it seems we may be in for a large drop of rain about then courtesy of Yasi. Add to this fact I shall be trudging around with camera in tow and that means you can basically bet the farm that at least the coast is going to get a soaking.
But before anyone puts deeds or grandma ownership papers on the table, be aware, I have fought back. In typical Murphy’s Law fashion, I have done probably the only thing that may hold back the heavens from dropping a large amount of wet stuff on the earth. I bought myself a rain poncho. Having given up on the concept of managing a camera bag, camera, walking stick and umbrella with two hands, I have gone deep into dork territory and acquired a poncho, large enough to shelter myself and assorted other crap. Now given Murphy’s Law, and providing I remember to put the dam thing in my bag, there should be nothing but brilliant blue skies, at least on Thursday of the coming week.
Well, that is the plan anyway.
